FAQ
Seattle Sea Otters – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Who can play for the Sea Otters?
Anyone! While our program is focused on creating an inclusive hockey experience for people with disabilities, we welcome players of all abilities, ages, backgrounds, and experience levels. If you want to be part of a fun, supportive hockey environment, you belong here.
Do I need to have a disability to participate?
Not at all. While many of our players are disabled or neurodivergent, we also welcome siblings, friends, and community members who want to play or support our inclusive model. Everyone is welcome—as a player, volunteer, or fan.
What ages can join?
We accept players starting at age 5, and there’s no upper age limit
What is the trial skate?
Our trial session on Friday, July 19 at 11:00 AM at Kraken Community Iceplex is a relaxed, no-pressure opportunity to try the ice, meet the team, and see if it feels like a good fit. There will be open skate space, mini-games, quiet zones, and lots of support on hand.
What kind of gear do I need?
All players must wear a helmet and gloves to be on the ice. If you have full hockey gear, great! If not, no problem, we’re gathering donated gear and can help fit you with what you need. We also allow adapted gear (bike helmets, lacrosse pads, etc.) for comfort and accessibility.
What if I need specialized equipment?
If you noted on your form that your player needs a sled, wheelchair, gait trainer, or pusher, we’ll be reaching out to coordinate. If you’re unsure, reply to any of our emails or contact us to discuss support options. We want to make sure everyone has what they need to participate safely.
Can I volunteer?
Yes please! We are always looking for volunteers to help both on and off the ice. You can help with equipment, admin tasks, registration, on-ice support, and more. We will help match you to the best fit.

- Background Check (Opens July 1 via ASHA)
If you’ve already completed a background check with USA Hockey, you can send us proof and we’ll waive the ASHA check
What about teen volunteers?

What if I’m an adult athlete with a disability?
ASHA offers alternate options:
Option 1: A parent/guardian may complete the training and background check on your behalf (with a signed form)
Option 2: You can take a simplified “SafeSport for Youth” course
Option 3: A full waiver can be requested with a signed accommodation form
Contact us if this applies to you, and we’ll help walk you through it.
